Probably everyone, not only those fighting with their overweight, has heard about the linseed and its health-promoting properties. Under this name we can find seeds of flax seed, Linum usitatissimum, a popular plant growing also in our country and supplying mainly fibers for the textile industry. However, it has a number of other valuable health properties, thanks to which its seeds have been used for years not only in natural medicine in general.

Linseed – chemical composition

When we look at these inconspicuous grains, we may wonder what lies behind them, that they are recommended for consumption by both doctors of various specialties and dieticians. They are used, for example, for the production of oil, the medicinal properties of which have been known since ancient times, and its drinking was recommended, among others, by Hippocrates, considered to be the “father of medicine“. They are mainly influenced by the chemical composition of the seed, in which we can find many valuable substances, and without them our body can not even do without them, that is:

  • a large amount of easily assimilable dietary fibre;
  • of vitamins A, B6, D and E;
  • minerals: iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese and selenium;
  • lecithins, flavonoids and plant hormones, phytoestrogens, valuable antioxidants;
  • unsaturated fatty acids, which our body is unable to produce on its own and which it needs to be continuously supplied with food, especially those of the Omega – 3 and Omega – 6 groups.

Linseed – pro-health properties

This amount of various nutrients may be surprising, but if you eat linseed regularly, you will quickly feel the positive changes it brings with it. Its health properties are inseparably linked to its composition, and the most important is the presence of fatty acids. They are of great importance in the treatment and prevention of heart and circulatory system diseases, preventing atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, particularly dangerous clots, flaxseed seeds effectively reduce the level of bad cholesterol in the blood. Omega – 3 acids also have anticancer and antidepressant properties, and being part of the retina, they support visual acuity, and have a good effect on the skin, preventing it from drying out.

In turn, the presence of fibre regulates all digestive processes, prevents flatulence and constipation, and the mucus itself has a beneficial effect, forming a protective layer in the stomach, thus supporting the treatment of ulcers. Other ingredients ensure proper functioning of the intestines, their peristalsis, while inhibiting the development of dangerous pathogenic microorganisms, bacteria and fungi that could attack the digestive system. They counteract many other types of infections, including respiratory infections, by relieving symptoms such as coughing resulting from excessive drying of mucous membranes. Siemia is used to treat skin diseases, e.g. acne, it also has a beneficial effect on the appearance of hair and nails.

We can therefore safely risk the statement that the organism, strengthened by the ingredients it contains, starts to resemble a well-oiled mechanism, in which nothing has the right to jam and it will thus function efficiently until late in life.

This process is especially facilitated by the presence of a large amount of dietary fiber recommended by people who want to reduce their body weight quickly and, what is most important, safely. Dietary fiber not only regulates and improves intestinal function, which is essential for digestion of food, accelerating all metabolic processes, but also significantly reduces appetite, thus preventing snacking between meals, the biggest enemy of an effective slimming diet. It swells in the stomach, effectively filling it, so that for a few hours we do not feel the need to eat. It is a component of many dietary supplements, and it is even more effective when combined with a healthy, well-balanced diet, but also with a large dose of daily physical activity, a favorite sport, accelerating weight loss even further.

Linseed can be eaten in many ways, alone or in addition to other dishes. Most often it is used to make a brew, drunk twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. Just pour a teaspoon of ground or whole seeds into a glass, pour the water over them and leave to stand for about 15 minutes. During this time they will cool down, swell considerably, cover themselves with mucus and obtain a slightly jelly-like consistency, which may not look appetizing, but the health benefits far outweigh these minor inconveniences. It can be drunk in a non-denatured form, which is recommended for constipation, as a laxative or as a liquid itself, grainless, as a protection for damaged gastric mucosa.

Linseed is also perfect for salads, various kinds of home-made baked goods, from home-made bread to cakes, of course sweetened with natural honey and not sugar. A very valuable addition, which will be useful not only for people on a diet, is the aforementioned linseed oil, with its characteristic brown colour and slightly nutty aftertaste.
